HELP Film Festival 2010

Lights, Camera, Action!

The HELP Film Festival which was held on 23 June might just have uncovered the next Yasmin Ahmad or P. Ramlee. The event showcased the talent and creativity of HELP students when working both in front and behind the camera.

The event was organized by the Multimedia Society, and the 10 films that were screened were made by students who took “Introduction to Film” and “Psychology of Film” in the previous semester. 5 films from each of these classes were randomly picked to be screened in the festival.

Among the notable were “Sherlock Holmes”, which took the audience by surprise and created lots of laughter with various cameos by the HELP Communication lecturers. They certainly stole the show with their witty acting, especially Ms. Murina!

Meanwhile, films such as “Significance of Love” and “My Pride” which tackled social issues, touched the audience with strong emotions and carried hidden moral messages.

The final film's directors Sidney and Ezwan said that they put in a lot of effort in making their horror film “Pink Obscura”. Their efforts sure paid of well because the film certainly sent chills up our spines! It had a very similar touch from Korean and Thai horror films, so kudos to both young directors for doing a great job.

The event ended with speech given by Ms. Brenda Danker, Multimedia Society's advisor, who said that students should dream big and learn from their mistakes. Ms. Brenda also showed trailers from films that are being made by her current batch of film students. Let's wait and watch these new films in the next HELP Film Festival.

To any HELP students who are interested in film-making but lack the confidence or experience, take these wise words from Ms. Brenda to heart, “anyone can make a film, all you need is a story”.
