World Cup 2010 Special

As the World Cup fever continues to sweep across the globe, we decided to ask our very own lecturers and students for their views on the tournament. Here is what some of them have to say:

Ms. Nabillah

Supports: South Korea

Why: She said the World Cup is a global event and that it is a rare chance to see an Asian team proceeding to the next stage. Additionally, she also expressed hope that South Korea would be able to make to finals.

Ashreena Pillai

Supports: Argentina

Why: I've always like their style of play. They are no "Brazil" but these South Americans bring their own brand of flair and flavour to the beautiful game. Plus, they've always had such colourful, iconic character too. From Kempes to Maradona, Batistuta and now Messi. They won their last World Cup back in 1986, the year I was born! So maybe there is some allegiance there too.

This time around with Diego Maradona at the helm and Lionel Messi spearheading the attack, it would be really special to see them winning the World Cup. It just seems like a fairytale. However, it's been an unpredictable tournament so far and I feel like they have not really turned in their best performance. The game against South Korea was just a glimpse of their potential.

Messi has yet to score but as long as he creates opportunities and turns provider for the goal scoreres and they win their games, I don't see why anyone would complain. What worries me is their defensive weakness and Juan Sebastian Veron's fitness. If they can work those problems out, Argentina are going to have a fine World Cup, win or lose. Well, I'm hoping it's a win!

Ms. Brenda

Supports: England

Why: It is because her nephew is supporting them as well and she also uses the tournament as a chance to increase bond with her nephew as they watched together on TV. At the same time, she is also impressed with Argentinean coach, Diego Maradona’s enthusiasm in leading the team.

Ms. Khao

Supports: Depends on who is playing

Why: She is currently more interested in the off-pitch news such as the rumoured fate of the North Korean team after losing to Portugal 7-0. In addition, she also mentioned that she would start to catch up on the scores when the quarterfinals kick off.

Lim Chee Keong

Supports: North Korea

Why: As a supporter of the North Korean team, he had only one response when they did not make it to the next stage of the tournament, “very sad lo, North Korea fail gao gao.”

Stay tuned for more in Part 2!!

HELP Film Festival 2010

Lights, Camera, Action!

The HELP Film Festival which was held on 23 June might just have uncovered the next Yasmin Ahmad or P. Ramlee. The event showcased the talent and creativity of HELP students when working both in front and behind the camera.

The event was organized by the Multimedia Society, and the 10 films that were screened were made by students who took “Introduction to Film” and “Psychology of Film” in the previous semester. 5 films from each of these classes were randomly picked to be screened in the festival.

Among the notable were “Sherlock Holmes”, which took the audience by surprise and created lots of laughter with various cameos by the HELP Communication lecturers. They certainly stole the show with their witty acting, especially Ms. Murina!

Meanwhile, films such as “Significance of Love” and “My Pride” which tackled social issues, touched the audience with strong emotions and carried hidden moral messages.

The final film's directors Sidney and Ezwan said that they put in a lot of effort in making their horror film “Pink Obscura”. Their efforts sure paid of well because the film certainly sent chills up our spines! It had a very similar touch from Korean and Thai horror films, so kudos to both young directors for doing a great job.

The event ended with speech given by Ms. Brenda Danker, Multimedia Society's advisor, who said that students should dream big and learn from their mistakes. Ms. Brenda also showed trailers from films that are being made by her current batch of film students. Let's wait and watch these new films in the next HELP Film Festival.

To any HELP students who are interested in film-making but lack the confidence or experience, take these wise words from Ms. Brenda to heart, “anyone can make a film, all you need is a story”.

The Fête de la Musique event

From rock band "Psycho Anthem", metal band "Beathesystem", dance performance by the HELP Dance Team, Indian modern dance performance, beatboxer/guitarist/singer "Darren Ashley", acoustic singers and many many more, Fête de la Musique at HELP University College on June 21st was beyond everybody’s expectations!

The various performances were really good and none of us wanted to leave the Lower Foyer. A few students were dancing, others were yelling and some were chilling on the stairs to support the amazing performers. Even though the Management Department asked the organizers to turn the music down… the atmosphere did not change AT ALL!

For those of you, who missed it, you can attend the Fête de la Musique next year…or wait a bit to watch the video that we are currently preparing.

Tips to enter the broadcast industry

The NTV7 crew, consisted of En. Zaman, Jasmine Abu Bakar and En. Manan Osman, shared a lot of interesting information about the broadcasting world during the career talk on June 16, 2010 at HELP University College.

For those of you, who are interested in broadcasting and could not attend the career talk, here are a few criteria that you need to have before getting yourself into the industry.

1. Interest

You need to be interested in the industry. Being passionate in what you do, will determine your success in the future.

2. Commitment

When you have the passion in your job, commitment will come naturally.

3. All-rounder

Newscaster: As a newscaster, you have to know that your job requires you to do more than reading the news at 8pm. You also need to monitor the content before it goes on air. You need to do some on-field reporting, attend events, emceeing, do charity work and lots more.

Broadcast journalist: Even when your area of specialty is crime, you need to know about other areas, too. You need to know about sports, politics, entertainment and many more. Get yourself updated with the current affairs of all the different areas.

4. Talent

News casting is not something you can learn from your lecturer. It is not something that you can study from the book. It requires talent and skills.

5. Be sensitive

As a newscaster, you are not to read the news blindly. You need to know the story before-hand. Remember that you have to convey the message to the audience, not read to them. Use different tones for different types of story.

So, do you have what it takes?

Malaysia Kini Field Trip

On June 17, 2010, a group of 23 students of Feature Writing class, MCH 303, were given the chance to visit Malaysia’s most established online news website organization, Malaysia Kini. The meeting was organized by MCH 303 lecturer, the experienced journalist, Mr Krishnamoorthy.

The students were greeted by Mr Steven Gan, the founder and editor-in-chief of Malaysia Kini. Mr Gan shared with the students the history of Malaysia Kini and how it has developed itself over time.

Malaysia Kini was founded in 1999, when Malaysians were already turning to alternative media for information. Steven Gan came up with the idea of establishing a professional journalist based website, which provides factual and unbiased information to readers.

Malaysia Kini is one of three online news sites in the world that makes money through subscription, which makes up 60% of its revenue. Malaysia Kini’s mission for 2010 is to gain RM 2.2 million from subscribers alone. The money is just enough to sustain the site. Malaysia Kini is mostly subscribed by individuals, who would get passwords to access the site. Now, even universities and colleges can have unlimited access to Malaysia Kini, when they pay a subscription fee of RM 1000.

Malaysia Kini consisted of five different sections; English, Malay, Mandarin, Tamil and Community Kini. There are a total of 35 journalists in Malaysia Kini, with 15 being in the English section. All the journalists work together in a big room and they help each other, in order to bring the readers with factual and fair news.

A year and a half ago, Malaysia Kini started to train citizen journalists. About 15 to 20 future citizen journalists participated and the training was organized during five weekends. Participants were taught about video editing, journalism skills and ethics.

If you’re interested in interning at Malaysia Kini, they would be happy to have you. However, they are selective. To become a Malaysia Kini intern, you need to be the best of the best journalist.

The ntv7 Next Newscaster Event

The crew was there. Many students were seen in their best formal attire and make up (yes, even some of the guys). The camera flashed the lights at the crowd while the news anchor reported her story. The day had finally arrived for the NTV7 News casting auditions. Students interested in the broadcast field were encouraged to go for the audition as a news anchor for the TV station. Alternatively, for those who wished to know more about the industry came for the career talk featuring guest speakers Jasmine Abu Bakar, En. Abdul Manan Oshman and En. Zaman held at the Theaterette yesterday at 11.45 a.m.

The event kicked off with the casting auditions for the three different languages of its news program in the conference hall. The audition candidates were seen rehearsing their script before it was their turn. At the same time, the crowd was cheering as games were held as entertainment for everyone present.

Being the first student to audition, Jessica Sharmini said she had mixed feelings of nervousness and confidence as she entered the hall. However, she felt relieved and expressed hope that such events would be held more frequently in future.

The event proceeded with the career talk with Ms. Ajinder being the emcee. Dr. Khong, Vice President of HELP started the session with a welcoming speech. This was followed by En. Zaman, executive editor of NTV7, who stressed on the importance of interest and commitment to be in the broadcasting field.

There was a loud applause when NTV7 news anchor Jasmine Abu Bakar stepped onto the stage to share her experience as a graphic designer, producer, news anchor and reporter.

En. Abdul Manan Oshman, executive news assignment editor, was the final speaker of the day. He spoke about how the broadcasting industry operates in the country.

The session ended with Dr. James Kuake, Head of Communication Department, who thanked everyone and presented a token of appreciation to the guest speakers.

This event was organized by Department of Communication’s Student Council, IPRMSA and MMS.
