Let's Get Pinked

What a discovery! It was the first time for both of us that we could feel 4 lumps in a "breast".
We were proud to have found 3 of them in 10 seconds but the last one was super difficult to find.. After 5 minutes (imagine 5 minutes at KPD-A, poking at a fake breast to find a lump), we gave up and asked for help. We later found out that the last one was hidden deep within the breast. We were given a leaflet, advice and information about breast cancer.

In 2002 in Malaysia: 1 woman out of 19 were at risk of having breast cancer
Today, it is predicted to be 1 woman out of 10!!

We were surprised to know that men also could suffer from breast cancer.. 2% of them.

We are all at risk BUT it is the only cancer that we can diagnosed ourself by self examination.

So people, lets take care of our boobs! Check it at least once a year by a gynecologist and once a month yourself. It can save your life!

Fans of locally-produced drama were treated to a special talk by creative director, Ng Ping Ho on Oct 13. Held at Main Block’s Theatrette, the event kicked off with emcee Hannah introducing the main star of the day - Ping Ho amid loud applause from the crowd.

Ping Ho, who is the brains behind popular local dramas and comedies such Kopitiam, Each Other and Ghost also owns production house Popiah Pictures.

With a vast experience in the film industry, he begins sharing his experiences from childhood till today. Despite his parents’ wishes for him to become an architect, he found his passion in arts and ultimately landed up doing film and series. He also emphasized on the importance of being passionate and hardworking in order to be successful in this field.

Besides that, he also gave some tips to students on how to pitch a good story. Among them was a strong one liner as a starter, emphasis on the characters’ personalities as well as the ability to capture audiences’ interest.

Scenes from his popular shows, Each Other and Ghost were also shown in which he further explained that it was crucial to let the scenes speak for itself.

Before the pitching started, a Q and A session was held for students to inquire about him and the industry. Students did not miss the golden opportunity by raising different questions from his current projects to his future plans as well as techniques to become a successful director.

Following the Q and A segment, a pitching session from the four teams participating in the KL 48 Hour Film Project was held where Ping Ho commented on their presentation style and how to improve them. The teams consisted of two teams from ADP as well as one each from HMC and a joint team from Communications and Psychology departments respectively. The American - Review

The story of an assassin hiding in Italy after killing 3 persons in Sweden, while waiting for his last assignment. The assassin is played by George Clooney. It sounded great!

BUT it was BORING! More boring than Eat, Pray, Love.

The assassin, named Edward, stays in a remote village in Italy, the weather is depressing, the movie is super slow (even though I thought that it would be the contrary). After 1 hour, I could see my neighbors playing with their phones or checking their emails. Some started to talk and one even left..

If you want to listen to George Clooney's sexy accent while talking in Italian, go for it!

PR Talk with Kim Chew

As early as 8 in the morning, Ms Kim Chew came to HELP to give a career talk to students of PR Methods (MCH305) and PR Audit (MCH 306). Ms Kim Chew is the principal consultant of Kim Chew Communications, a boutique PR consultancy firm in Petaling Jaya.

During the 1 hour talk, she shared how it is like to be in the PR industry, what it takes to be in the industry and other industries that PR people have to deal with. Here are 10 key elements to become successful, according to Ms Kim Chew:

Read: A PR person has to love to read all kinds of literature, not only limited to one.

Write: A PR person must have the ability to write well.

Think: Analytical thinking is when a person takes in a piece of information, but does not accept it 100%. A PR person must be able to have his/her own viewpoint on certain issues.

Boss: Study your boss. Get to know his/her personality and try to work according to the personality.

Be eager: Be eager to learn more. Research is a crucial thing, if you want to know your clients and their industries more.

Helicopter viewpoint: Look at something in the bigger picture. Get to know your client’s industry and figure out things that can make or break the industry.

Project management: As a PR person, you must be able to handle the project that is assigned to you well. You must know how to handle the different parties, which are involved in the project.

Multitask: The ability to multitask is important for a PR person, especially if he/she is in the consultancy department.

Team player: PR involves working with different types of people of different areas, therefore you need to be able to work well with others.

Deadline: It is important to meet the deadline. Missing the deadline means you will be fined. Therefore, make sure you manage your time properly.

Kim Chew Communications does accept interns at least once a year, depending on the needs. If you’re interested to intern there, you can e-mail Ms Kim Chew at kim@kimchew.com or call 03-77263430. If you couldn’t get to her, you can ask for Jacqueline Arnold or email her at jacq@kimchew.com.
