Creating Stories for Screen Talk by Ng Ping Ho

Fans of locally-produced drama were treated to a special talk by creative director, Ng Ping Ho on Oct 13. Held at Main Block’s Theatrette, the event kicked off with emcee Hannah introducing the main star of the day - Ping Ho amid loud applause from the crowd.

Ping Ho, who is the brains behind popular local dramas and comedies such Kopitiam, Each Other and Ghost also owns production house Popiah Pictures.

With a vast experience in the film industry, he begins sharing his experiences from childhood till today. Despite his parents’ wishes for him to become an architect, he found his passion in arts and ultimately landed up doing film and series. He also emphasized on the importance of being passionate and hardworking in order to be successful in this field.

Besides that, he also gave some tips to students on how to pitch a good story. Among them was a strong one liner as a starter, emphasis on the characters’ personalities as well as the ability to capture audiences’ interest.

Scenes from his popular shows, Each Other and Ghost were also shown in which he further explained that it was crucial to let the scenes speak for itself.

Before the pitching started, a Q and A session was held for students to inquire about him and the industry. Students did not miss the golden opportunity by raising different questions from his current projects to his future plans as well as techniques to become a successful director.

Following the Q and A segment, a pitching session from the four teams participating in the KL 48 Hour Film Project was held where Ping Ho commented on their presentation style and how to improve them. The teams consisted of two teams from ADP as well as one each from HMC and a joint team from Communications and Psychology departments respectively. Other individuals also took the chance to showcase their talent in front of the crowd.

The event came to a close with Miss Brenda Danker presenting a token of appreciation to Ping Ho.
